Toto expanded its production facilities abroad, and doing business in France and Germany, Indonesia, Korea and Taiwan, Thailand and the People's Republic of China. North America was seen as an opportunity to grow for Washlet toilets and bidet seats, as opposed its "base" markets in Japan and China.
Dhaniram Toto was recording Toto words to ensure that the future generations could comprehend the words. However, many of the words were being replaced by foreign ones, such as dui from Bengali for verandah.
Origins
Established in 1917, Toto's early years mirrored Japan's economic growth. In the beginning of its existence, the company made goods to meet demand for new, modern urban housing. It was the first tunnel kiln in the country to produce ceramics continuously. It also pioneered the use of automation for production control, allowing greater efficiency and a more consistent production.
In the late 1980s, the company began expanding overseas in order to take advantage of sales and new markets. It created the Cera Trading Company, importing and selling other manufacturers' products to complement its own lines of plumbing fittings and sanitary earthenware. In the late 1990s, Toto had shifted its emphasis on research and development for water-related household appliances. It also improved its distribution system to better meet the needs of its customers and boost profits. With a name as evocative as Asia you'd think that the group would be prog kings and queens however, it's actually a fairly straightforward rock band. The group started out as a group and recorded two albums: 1979's self-titled debut album, and 1980's Armed to the Teeth. The group has a diverse musical background, but their biggest success came in 1982 with Toto IV.
The album was a major blockbuster, but it was not without its problems. Record companies placed the band on the place with the directive "give us a hit record or we'll take you off the market" and the pressure was on to give it. Luckily for Toto, they did and they did it with the aid of the smash single "Africa."
Toto's musical mastery owes a lot to their previous experience since the members were session musicians for artists like Boz Scaggs, Steely Dan, and Seals and Crofts prior to forming the group. Their sonic signature has since become the standard for '80s pop, and has influenced many contemporary artists.
The album opens with a strong and pounding sound, with songs such as Running Out of Time and Unknown Soldier showcasing the bands ability to write great AOR songs that slowly build their hooks into you. The album also contains more jazzy, slower tracks such as The Little Things and Chinatown. The album ends with Great Expectations. This song is a mix of folk and distortion AOR that could appear completely unnatural, but actually works extremely well.
After Toto IV, the band's fortunes started to plummet. David Hungate left the band to pursue a solo career and the band had a variety of drummers. In 1984, Bobby Kimball left the band after drug charges. The band continued with Michael Porcaro, Steve Lukather and Michael Porcaro.
Toto released Isolation despite the turmoil. It was not as well-liked as IV. However, the band had a successful chart-topping album in 1992, Kingdom of Desire. This album marked the end of Toto's lineup and the debut of Simon Phillips, a new singer.

Line-up
The band's third album, Turn Back, marked an reversion to the classic sextet style of the previous albums. It was a stronger, more consistent effort that had an edge that was stronger than Hydra. The more edgy sound of the album was a reflection of the maturation of the group and included drummer Bobby Kimball's greater virtuosity on drums, and an improved, mature vocal delivery by singer Joseph Williams. David Paich's work was more refined, sharper, and less derivative than on previous performances.After touring to promote their album, the group recorded an Amsterdam live performance that was released by Eagle Records as a 2-CD set entitled Falling In Between. The group released a new studio album a few months after, and went on a world tour help promote it. In this time, keyboardist Greg Phillinganes replaced Paich and bassist David Hungate quit the group to spend time with his family.
In 1998, Paich and Lukather started searching through old demo tapes and tapes to make an album that would feature songs that were never recorded before. It was completed in the form of a double-album called Then Now in 2001. It was the first album by the band not to include one single track with the word "A" in its title. It also included one previously not released track, "Kari-Anne".
By 2003, Toto had begun to decline in popularity. The fourth album, Old Is New, was a commercial failure, and vocalist Williams was suffering from a severe laryngitis infection that limited his singing abilities. In addition, Hungate returned to Nashville and drummer Leland Sklar was replaced by Shem von Schroeck.
Downes and the other original members of Asia--Wetton, Palmer, and Howe--convened an event in England in the beginning of 2006 to discuss the possibility of formally restructuring the band. The lineup, with the exception of Howe who was busy with Yes at the time, became Toto XIV. They toured extensively.
In 2010, the band reunited for another reunion tour with a slightly different line-up, including guitarists Mike Porcaro and Steve Lukather, drummer John Pierce, bassist Shannon Forrest, and multi-instrumentalists Warren Ham and Dominique Taplin. The group also had the appearance of singer Michael McDonald, and a backing singer named Mabvuto Carpenter.
